Ian Marlow is a man of many talents: sculptor, artist, poet. From his studio in his home county of Somerset, he makes powerful sculptures in metal and coloured glass inspired by the natural world. His work is bold and contemporary but also mindful of, and sensitive to, the environment in which it sits. His woodland garden is a testament to this, where several of his pieces of varying scale – birds, plants, flowers and leaves – sit harmoniously with the surrounding trees and each other.
I have a personal connection with Ian. The first spring after my late father diedmy mother was drawn immediately to his work, then being exhibited in Mells, Somerset. A phone call later, followed by a short drive through Somerset lanes, and my mother and I were being warmly ushered into the Ebenezer Chapel, Ian’s atmospheric studio, and handed hot mugs of tea. We went home, some hours later, having purchased a sculpture of a swan taking flight to remember my father. The piece still stands in my mother’s garden.
Ian is a nationally renowned sculptor with work regularly appearing the length and breadth of the British Isles. A swan sat in a sculptural nest, resting in the moat of the Bishop’s Palace in Wells, is a particular, and much-loved, favourite of mine.
I urge you to take a peaceful moment out of your day to enjoy Ian’s work. His website can be found here.
