In the weeks leading up to Handmade Oxford the weather was not at all prepossessing. Even as the fateful week dawned, the rain fell unceasingly, the wind blew a hoolie and the temperature was more akin to March than June. I wasn’t hopeful.
And then a tiny miracle occurred ...
The wind dropped, the temperature rose, the sun appeared.
From the beginning of set-up, until the show closed its doors on the final day, we endured no more than perhaps 2-hours of rain. The Gods of Making had smiled upon us!
A show like Handmade Oxford is without question a labour of love. The Handmade in Britain Team, I can safely say, is the hardest working group of people I have ever come across. Now able to count myself among their number, we work tirelessly for months prior to the show, and barely take a breath during it, to ensure we do our best to support everyone, be it maker or visitor. While we unfortunately have no power over sales, we try to make the show an enjoyable and supportive experience for all who take part.
I want to thank all the amazing makers who exhibited at this year’s show, the many visitors who came, and the making organisations who partnered with us: The Oxfordshire Craft Guild, The London Potters, The New Ashgate Gallery, The Society of Designer Craftsmen, Modern Makers Collective, The Northamptonshire Guild, Design Nation and Future Icons Selects. I must express my gratitude to those from beyond our industry who supported the show: the Oxford Collection, Ox Magazine, The Ashmolean Museum, and last but not least our hosts, Waterperry Gardens. It takes a community to raise a child, and Handmade Oxford, to the Handmade in Britain team, is just that.
As we waved a “fond farewell” to Handmade Oxford 2025, the preparations for Handmade Chelsea kicked in. There is no room for a rest in the world of craft!
Applications for Handmade Chelsea are now open, visit Handmade in Britain for details.
