Curation is an important part of my work in Making Goode and it fulfils a number of functions. Doing a show can be a lonely experience, it can also be daunting committing to an event, and its associated costs, when a maker hasn’t tried it before. In addition, some makers don’t have the confidence to approach an event to show and sell their work even though they may be very talented. This is where I step in. Curation is about supporting makers in the following ways:

  • Spotting the maker’s talent

  • Inviting the maker to do a show/market that is right for them

  • Where possible offering a reduced rate to do the show

  • Supporting the maker in advance of the show and throughout its duration

  • Introducing the maker to people who can help them

  • Offering guidance on how the maker presents and sells their work

  • Creating a community within an event where the makers present support each other

I have been an independent curator for Handmade in Britain since 2016, introducing the show and its visitors to exciting talent. I also curate for Canopy Market, Boulevard Market at Islington Square and Battersea River Walk.

Everyone wants to be seen, to be heard and to be appreciated and curation, which has the added bonus of offering support, is the perfect vehicle with which to achieve these goals.
